Replacing an Old Pool Controller: What to Check First

Pentair, Hayward and Jandy all sell kits that upgrade older automation systems. Here's what each maker says the kits cover, and why installation is electrician work.

This page has no affiliate links. Facts recorded Oct 25, 2026 from the official sources linked in each section. Manufacturer pages change, so check the current version and your system's manual.

Difficulty: research only; installation is for a licensed electrician or qualified pool pro

Safety first: line voltage

  • Hayward says its OmniLogic, OmniPL and ProLogic controllers "are large multifunction, high voltage control systems" that must be installed per the NEC and local codes and configured for your equipment, and "highly recommends" installation by a licensed professional.
  • Pentair's IntelliCenter upgrade-kit guide says all work must be performed by a licensed electrician (or the product installed by a licensed or certified electrician or a qualified pool professional), and to always disconnect power at the breaker before servicing the load center.

The question

"My controller (EasyTouch, IntelliTouch, ProLogic, AquaLink and so on) is failing. What replaces it, and what else has to change?" Each maker offers an upgrade path. The details below are what the makers publish; we don't call anything "drop-in" unless the maker does.

Pentair: EasyTouch / IntelliTouch to IntelliCenter

  • Pentair's FAQ lists the last purchase dates as July 31, 2023 for IntelliTouch systems and September 29, 2023 for EasyTouch systems.
  • Pentair says its IntelliCenter Upgrade Kit turns older EasyTouch and IntelliTouch systems into IntelliCenter "without having to do a full replacement."
  • Kits are split by system age. For "common systems manufactured after 2012" (CLC/CPC): 522047, 522048, 523049, 523529, which include an outdoor control panel, an i10P/i10PS/i10D/i10X personality board, 4 A and 5 A circuit breakers, a system transformer and a wireless antenna kit. For "legacy systems manufactured prior to 2012" (LC/PC): 522045, 522046, 523218, 523530, which include the panel, personality board, a transformer bracket assembly and an antenna kit. Pentair lists them as "available through dealer."
  • Pentair's FAQ says that for in-warranty break/fix it will replace legacy systems with comparable equipment while parts are available, or provide an IntelliCenter Upgrade Kit if not.
  • If you have an IntelliChlor salt cell, Pentair says the IntelliChlor Plus/LT connects to IntelliCenter as well as legacy EasyTouch and IntelliTouch systems, and that chlorine output can't be adjusted at the cell's display when it's connected to automation.

Hayward: ProLogic and others to OmniPL

  • Hayward says its OmniPL Retrofit Kit (HLPROUPG) brings Omni functionality "to a wide array of ProLogic, AquaPlus, AquaLogic or E-Command controls."
  • Hayward notes the kit "is not compatible with any ProLogic or AquaLogic legacy wireless, wall mount, desktop, or spaside remote controls"; it lists the Omni remotes HLWRELESS, HLWALLMOUNT and HLSPASIDE as compatible.
  • Hayward says it can control up to 8 Hayward variable-speed pumps without relays, and is "ready for salt once you add a Hayward Salt Cell."
  • Manufacturer claim Hayward says installation takes "an hour or less." That's for a professional; see the safety box.
  • Hayward lists it as an EXPERT LINE product, sold only through a local pool professional or in-store.

Jandy: AquaLink upgrade and conversion kits

  • Jandy lists the iAquaLink 3.0 upgrade kit (iQ30-RS) "with RS-PS8 PCB, bezel, CPU."
  • Jandy says its conversion kits can convert "old AquaLink, Ji Series, Polaris EOS/SOL, Compool, and Pentair controls" to AquaLink technology. It publishes a separate installation guide for converting Pentair enclosures (document H0669200).
  • We didn't verify which AquaLink revisions each kit supports; check the kit's quick start guide (H0698700) or ask Jandy before you buy.

Before you buy: a checklist

  1. Photograph the controller's labels: model, board and revision numbers, and the inside of the panel (with power off, by your installer).
  2. List everything it controls: pumps (and whether they're variable-speed), heater, salt cell, lights, valve actuators, remotes.
  3. Check each item against the maker's kit page (remote compatibility is a known catch on Hayward's kit).
  4. Get the kit's part number for your system age (Pentair splits kits at 2012).
  5. Book a licensed electrician or qualified pool pro for the install and programming.

Should you DIY? / When to call a pro

Fine to DIY: identifying your controller, listing the equipment it runs, reading the makers' kit pages, and getting quotes.

Call a licensed electrician or qualified pool professional: opening the panel, line-voltage wiring, bonding, installing the kit, and configuring it. Hayward and Pentair both say so.

See our full When to Call a Pro page. Follow your model's manual; this site isn't a substitute for it, and it isn't legal advice.

If your model isn't listed

The numbers on this page come from specific manufacturer documents and models. If your equipment isn't one of them, don't assume the same numbers apply: find the model number on the rating plate, open that model's manual on the manufacturer's site, or contact the manufacturer. You can also email us with the brand and model number.
